Vikings Defeat
Monroe-WoodburY Gray
10/18/09
A week after defeating Monroe-Woodbury (bk), the Vikings returned home to face the Monroe-Woodbury (gry) team in the rain.
Viking ball-carriers Jarod Baron and Jaylin Mcghee helped the Vikings move into Crusader territory. The Viking drive would stall but their defense held the Crusaders deep in their own territory for the remainder of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, quarterback Jordan Lewis put the Vikings ahead with a 47 yard touchdown run thanks to the blocks of Jihad Clarke, Kenneth Collins, Aidan Lilly, and Billy Hollis-Ragin, and the Vikings lead 6-0.
The Viking defense would get into the act on the Crusader next possession when Perron Gregory recovered a Crusader fumble at the Crusader 38 yard line. It is significant that the Vikings were deep in Crusader territory, because after a turnover on downs, the Crusader runner outran the Viking defense to the sideline and was ahead of everyone with an apparent 70 yard touchdown. However, the Crusader runner dropped the ball on the ten yard line and it was recovered by the Vikings Tijier Moreno.
Unable to get a first down, the Vikings returned the ball to Monroe-Woodbury at their 35 yard line. The defense of Drew and Jake Tommarello and Jordan Lewis stopped this Crusader drive and the Vikings went into halftime ahead 6-0.
In the fourth quarter, the game turned into a defensive battle. A Crusader drive, helped by a 30 yard run, put the ball on the Vikings 15 yard line. Jordan Lewis then made a stop on third down and Corey Baron, Jordan Forrest and Christopher White helped the Vikings cause a Crusader turnover on the Vikings five yard line.
A Jarod Baron run plus a penalty helped move them away from their end-zone to the 35 yard line. Monroe would play good defense and hold the Vikings there to regain possession at the 30 yard line with less than two minutes left in the game.
The Crusaders were in field position, and sensing a comeback. After moving the ball to within the Vikings 15 yard line and with the crowd cheering them on, Viking Tijier Moreno would stop the drive on a third down pass with an interception, protecting the Vikings 6-0 win.
