Ravens and Vikings Play a ThrillINg Friendship Bowl Game

11/13/09

NRYTL’s version of Friday Night lights at Fosina field featured the Ravens and Vikings who participated in the Friendship Bowl. The game was billed as friendly bragging rights amongst future teammates, and a sign of the talent on the horizon, as both teams concluded the RCPWL league schedule with a 9-1 record.

The Ravens came into the game known for their long range scoring offense. The Vikings displayed the power running game and defense. In the end this Mitey-mite affair came down to the kicking game.

The Vikings took the field first on offense. But on the first offensive play a Viking fumble gave the Ravens the ball on the Viking 30 yard line. Raven Romeo Holden quickly set the tone of the game with a 30 yard touchdown run to give the Ravens a quick lead.
The Corey Thomas extra point kick was successful and the Ravens lead 8-0.

The Vikings offense took the field once again and began feeding Jarod Baron and Jake Tommarello. The tough running positioned the football inside of the raven 25 yard line.
Quarterback Jordan Lewis then hit to Jarrett Haines for a 18 yard pass, catch, and run for the touchdown. The point after kick was unsuccessful and the Ravens held an 8-6 lead.

The Vikings defense then came alive and stalled the Raven high-flying attack. Now on offense again, Jarod Baron would run the Vikings into raven territory on consecutive carries. Baron then followed the blocks of Kenneth Collins, Perron Gregory, Jordan Forrest, Aidan Lilly, Tijier Moreno, and Mekhi Benjamin off left tackle and race to the one yard line before being tackled by Raven Jamal Dallas. Quarterback Jordan Lewis would push the ball over with a sneak for the touchdown. The Jordan Forrest PAT kick was successful and the Vikings held a 14-8 lead over the Ravens.

Undaunted, the Ravens marched downfield behind Romeo Holden and Jamal Dallas runs. The drive would lead to a Holden 10 yard touchdown run into the end-zone.
The Corey Thomas PAT with the hold of Hezikiah Brown gave the Ravens a 16-14 lead at halftime.

The two teams exchanged possessions through the third quarter until late. Good field position allowed the Ravens to once again move into scoring position. Holden would score his third touchdown of the game from two yards away and extend the Ravens lead to 22-14.

The Raven defense, lead by Hezikiah Brown, Jamal Dallas, Corey Thomas, JohnRyan Freeman, Shawn Gilcrest,2 and Jaishon Spady then held the Viking power game at bay until midway through the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter the Viking offense came alive once again as Viking Jarod Baron smartly followed his blocking to get into Raven territory.

A Jordan Lewis run to the Raven twenty yard line was called back due to a Viking penalty. On third a long, Jarod Baron passed to Jarrett Haines for 19 yards to set up a 4th and one play with less than 5 minutes remaining in the game. Lewis would come through with another quarterback sneak to keep the Vikings chances alive. Quarterback Lewis then passed to Drew Tommarello who dived to catch the ball inside of the 5 yard line. Jarod Baron then barreled into the end-zone from two yards away to decrease the score to Ravens 22 Vikings 20

With the crowd going wild, Viking extra point man Jordan Forrest settled in and focused on the Jake Tommarello hold.…..A good extra point kick and the game is tied. Forrest waited for the crowd to settle, began his approach…..the kick was up…it looks good and ……it hits the bottom of the goal post!  But what a great kick under the pressure and circumstances! The Ravens would run the final minute of this exciting game out.

Congratulations to both teams for excellent seasons as there were no losers in the 2009 Friendship Bowl.
