Lions Fall 25-12 in Thanksgiving Bowl Game

11/28/09

On Saturday November 28th, the Jr. Pee wee Lions faced the Suffolk (Va.) Steelers in the 9th Annual Woodlawn Bowl in Baltimore Maryland. The Lions entered the game looking to end their rocky season on a winning note, but the Steelers pulled away in the close game with two late scores and a 25-12 win.

The Steelers wasted no time in scoring by receiving the kickoff and returning it to the Lion 40 yard line. The Lion defense held until a critical 3rd down conversion was successful. The Steelers had moved to within the Lion ten yard line when the Lions took a timeout. With Lion players running onto the field after the timeout the referee blew the whistle and the Steelers ran into the end-zone untouched. They would add the extra point and take a 7-0 lead.

Lion Myles Taylor took away the Steeler momentum with a 30 yard return on the ensuing kickoff. Now on offense the Lions looked to move the ball but came out sluggish. Running back Jalen Young would then fumble the ball to the Steelers inside of the Lion 35 yard line. Luckily, the Lion defense of Luke Clifford, Zachary Lyttle, Marlon Gardner and Ryan Love stepped up and held the Steeler attack.

The Lion offense then shifted into gear with power runs of Christian Ancrum and Zachary Lyttle following Will Weber and Miles Harvey blocking. Jalen Young then made up for the earlier fumble with a 35 yard run around left end to the Steelers 5 yard line. Young would cross the goal line two plays later behind Marlon Gardner blocking for the touchdown, closing the score at 7-6 (PAT run failed).

The Lions now had the momentum and the defense continually returned the ball to the offense. Joshua Watts played exceptional in the defensive backfield, while Ahmad Galimore and Tiason Moreno had multiple sacks of the Steeler quarterback. On offense, quarterback Myles Taylor continued to feed Lion running backs Ancrum, Lyttle and Young until Young broke fee for his second touchdown from 15 yards away. The extra point failed and the Lions took a 12-7 lead into the half.

The Steelers took advantage of two Lion offensive fumbles in the third quarter to give them excellent field position. The field position helped them score the only touchdown of the third quarter and take a 13-12 lead over the Lions heading into the fourth period.

The two teams exchanged possessions until midway through the fourth quarter when the Steelers receiver got behind the Lion secondary for a 45 yard touchdown pass to extend their lead to 19-12.  The ensuing kickoff return by Joshua Watts placed the ball inside of the Steeler 50 as the Lions looked to comeback. However, the Steeler defense stopped the Lions and caused a turnover on downs.

Now on the Lion 45 yard line, the Steelers threw an out pass to their running back who then ran down the left sideline into the end-zone for the final score of the game and 25-12 win.

Other Lions who played hard were Rashan Sullins, Andrew Capizzano, Victoria Jones-Alleyene, Khairi Manns, Elliott Aponte, Marlan Riley, Nashiem Hiland and Paul Wright.
