Lions Avenge Only Defeat 28-6 11/11/07
Rarely does a team have the opportunity to avenge a loss, but on Sunday the Lions traveled back to Eastchester to play the RCPWL Jr. Pee champions. The team that they lost to in the playoffs 13-0. The theme of the day for the Lions was "play your game and have fun". The Lions did just that, and came away with a decisive 28-6 victory.
The Lions began on defense as Devonte Banner(24), and Danny Pistolesi(12) helped set the tone by holding Eastchester on four downs. After a punt the Lions offense took the field. The Lion offensive line of Jonathan Yudell(57), Jevon Taylor(60), Nigel Jones(99), Charlie Verni(58),Ryan Gil(64), along with ends Antoine Lewis(14) and Jordan Davis(80), set the tone early with their run blocking. After quarterback Tyler Fernandez(2) attempted a few passes the Lions offense commited to running the football. Bryson Hayes(21) led the way downfield with multiple power runs.
However, the drive ended at the Eastchester 10 yard line when the Lions couldn't convert a fourth down. Eastchester did not get a first down on offense and decided to attempt a fourth down fake on their own 12 yard line, which the Lions stopped. DaMarcus Miller(27) then powered his way into the endzone from 5 yards away for a Lion touchdown, with Bryson Hayes(21) adding the extra point.
Eastchester then recieved the ball and quickly moved the ball downfield thanks to a long off tackle 40 yard run that safety Fernandez(2) and linebacker Miller(27) caught at the 20 yard line. In a fluke play, Eastchester then passed and safety Dean Tomarello(16) leaped for his third interception of the season. But the ball bounced off of his hands and was caught by the Eastchester receiver in the endzone. A 7-6 score suggested this game was shaping up to be another tough game, but the Lion offense put together another long drive featuring Hayes(21), Miller(27), Devonte Banner(24) and Rashan Gilmore(42). Miller ended the drive with a 30 yard burst off tackle through the Eastchester secondary for a touchdown (extra point run by Tyler Fernandez) and a 14-6 Lion lead.
In the second half the Lions offensive line continued to wear down the Eastchester defense as another long drive of short runs led to a Tyler Fernandez(2) quarterback sneak for a touchdown (extra point by Hayes). In the fourth quarter Jordan Davis(80) gave the crowd a thrill when he took a handoff from Fernandez(2) and outran the defense 75 yards for the final score by the Lions (extra point by Hayes).
Safety Tyler Fernandez(2) ended Eastchester's final two drives with interceptions, returning the last one 45 yards to the 5 yard line as time expired.
Other Lions who played well in this game were Jordan Luzzi(85), Tyrell Bennett(95), Vaughn Taylor(9), Dean Tomarello(16), Jeremiah Harris(41), and Mike Davis(63).
