Lions defeated 24-0 by Ramapo
11/08/09
The Lions returned to face Spring Valley/Ramapo on Sunday 11/8/09. These two teams faced off in September with the Lions winning 13-0, but on this day Ramapo returned the favor with a 24-0 victory.
The Lion defense started the game and quickly showed they came to play. Defensive stops for losses by Tiason Moreno, Harvey Miles, Christian Ancrum and Ryan Love forced a Ramapo punt. The Lions started the game fast on offense. Quarterback Marlan Riley dropped back and passed to receiver Marlon Gardner. Gardner outfought a Ramapo defender for the ball and raced 60 yards before being tackled at the 11 yard line. However, a fumble on the exchange by Riley and Jalen Young was recovered by Ramapo and it ended the Lion drive.
The Lion defense again pushed the Ramapo offense back, but on a critical third and long play, a Ramapo runner got outside of the Lion defense for a thirty yard gain. The Lion defense would hold Ramapo but field position had switched in the favor of Ramapo. On the Lions next offensive drive Nashiem Hiland gained tough yards up the middle, but at the end of the run a Ramapo defender caused a fumble at the Lion 35 yard line. On the next play the Ramapo receiver got behind the Lion secondary and caught a touchdown pass for a 6-0 Ramapo lead.
The second quarter saw teams battle for field position. Midway through the second quarter a Ramapo runner broke free for a long run to the Lion 10 yard line. Ramapo would score on the drive to take a 12-0 lead.
The Lions would attempt to comeback beginning with a kickoff return by Elliott Aponte. Runs by Zachary Lyttle and Jalen Young would position the Lion offense at the Ramapo 40 yard line. Quarterback Marlan Riley then threw long to Joshua Watts who was hit by a Ramapo defender before the ball arrived, resulting in a pass interference call. With the ball on the Ramapo 10 yard line and less than 10 seconds left until halftime and no timeouts left, the Lions had one play. Riley pitched the football to Jalen Young who looked to pass the ball. With all of the receivers covered; Young took off across the field, weaving in and out of would be tacklers. However, he was gang tackled at the two yard line after running out of room near the opposite sideline.
Despite strong runs by Zachary Lyttle, the Lions were unable to maintain offensive drives in the third and fourth quarter. After continually stopping Ramapo, the Lion defense allowed another long run a touchdown and 18-0 Ramapo lead. With less than two minutes left in the game, Ramapo threw a short pass that resulted in a 50 yard touchdown for the final scoring.
Other Lions who played well included William Weber, Andrew Capizzano, Victoria Jones-Alleyne, Rashan Sullins, Paul Wright, Luke Clifford, Ahmad Galimore, Khairi Manns, and Makhel Wilson.
