Lions Close but Fall 13-12

11/01/09

The Lions traveled to take on Orangetown Patriots on 11/1 looking to end a two game losing streak. After a tough fight the Lions fell 13-12.

The Lion defense started strong and quickly turned the ball over to the offense. Fullback Christian Ancrum bulled his way for tough yards before Jalen Young finished off the drive with a 25 yard touchdown, following Marlon Gardner and Ryan Love blocking. The extra point run by Elliott Aponte came up just short and the Lions lead 6-0.

The Patriots quickly struck back on the ensuing kickoff. After receiving the ball the Patriot returner up the middle of the Lion kickoff team for a 65 yard touchdown return. Orangetown then added the extra point run to take a 7-6 lead.

The end of the first and through the second quarter became a game of defense and field position. Orangetown was in good field position when they intercepted a Lion pass that was caught by Zachary Lyttle and the Patriot defender, but awarded to the Patriots. Lion Jalen Young then returned the favor by intercepting the Orangetown quarterback at the Lion 15 yard line.

After a Lion punt the Patriots began to move the ball, looking to score before halftime. With one play left until halftime Lion cornerback Myles Taylor intercepted the Orangetown pass and began the long race to the end-zone. However, after running 60 yards, Taylor was tackled inside of the twenty. The half ended and the Lions went into halftime down 7-6.

The Lion offense came alive on the first drive of the third quarter. Two Jalen Young runs positioned the Lions inside of the Orangetown twenty yard line. Young then dropped to pass to Myles Taylor in the flat and the pass was intercepted. Lion fullback Christian Ancrum then showed great effort by catching the Patriot running down the sideline, tackling him and causing him to fumble and recovering the ball for the Lions. The damage was done as Orangetown was deep in Lion territory when the Lions gave the ball back on exchange of possession. Orangetown would score the touchdown and extra point to increase their lead to 13-6.

With less than 6 minutes left in the game the Lions began to move the ball once again. Christian Ancrum again followed the blocking of Miles Harvey, Khairi Manns, Luke Clifford and Ahmad Galimore when he broke free for a 50 yard run down to the Orangetown 10 yard line. Lion Nashiem Highland ran to the outside from five yards away for the Lion touchdown to close the score at 13-12.

The extra point conversion was controversial as Ancrum seemingly crossed the goal line with a straight dive run, but officials ruled that his knee was down before his upper body and ball crossed the line. Orangetown offense recovered the onside kick attempt and ran out the ball in the final minute of play.

Other Lions who played well included Paul Wright,Tiason Moreno, Joshua Watts, Andrew Capizzano,Makhel Wilson, William Weber, Rashan Sullins, and Victoria Jones-Alleyne.
