Lions Defeat New City in playoff victory 13-0 10/19/08
The Jr. Pee Wee level is the only level that has a playoff format this year in the RCPWL. On Sunday 10/19/08, the Lions hosted their quarter final playoff game against the New City Rams.
The two teams came out prepared for a battle. After changing offensive field position,
Lion safety Dean Tommarello caused a New City fumble that was recovered by defensive end Mike Davis.
In the second quarter the New City offense advanced inside of the Lion 20 yard line. Dean Tommarello then intercepted a long pass intended for the New City receiver, who was also covered by Isaiah Washington. However, the New City defense was able to contain the Lions offense for the remainder of the quarter.
Late in the second quarter, with three seconds left until halftime the Lion defense stopped New City on their own 37 yard line. In one of the most exciting plays in recent YTL memory, Tommarello took a handoff intended to run out the 3 seconds on clock until halftime. Instead, he weaved to the left sideline, broke a tackle, then reversed up the field to the right before cutting back to the left and outrunning the New City defenders to the end-zone for a spectacular 63 yard touchdown run. The Lions extra point run failed and they took a 6-0 lead into the half.
The third quarter saw the two teams offense fighting for field position. On one series the New City offense attempted to quickly move downfield by passing. Dean Tommarello then picked off his second pass of the game and returned the ball 40 yards into the end-zone. Jordan Davis extended the Lion lead to 13-0 with the extra point run.
But New City didn’t give up. On the ensuing kickoff the Rams returner received the ball and raced through the Lion defenders headed for the end zone. Lion Bryce Davis turned on the speed and ran down the runner with a diving ankle tackle that stopped him at the 12-yard line.
The defensive play of Kobe Gathers, Myson Robinson, Marquez Jackson-Allen, Vaughn Howard, Rashan Gilmore and Danny Pistolesi would hold the New City offense on this series and prevent them from scoring. In the fourth quarter the Lion defense would hold the New City offense on two other different series when New City had the ball inside of the Lion 10-yard line.
Late in the fourth quarter, after another Lion defensive stance inside of their 15 yard line, Dean Tommarello excited the crowd once again with another weaving 75 yard run before being pushed out of bounds at the 12 yard line. The Lions did not score and New City ran out the clock when they received possession.
This weekend the Lions will face Monroe-Woodbury in a semi-final playoff game at Fosina Field.
