Lions Over New jersey 14-6 10/18/09
The Lions opened the NRYTL rainy weekend versus the New Jersey Giants on 11/18/09. Despite the wind chilled rainy conditions, the Lions were able to pull out a 14-6 win.
The Lions didn’t waste time getting in the scoring column. On the New Jersey kickoff,
returner Myles Taylor found a gap in the New Jersey coverage unit and raced 70 yards for a touchdown. Zachary Lyttle added the extra point run to give the Lions a 7-0 lead with a minute gone in the game.
The Lion defense, lead by Miles Harvey, Ahmad Galimore and Ryan Love held the New Jersey offensive attack and gave the Lion offense the ball with good field position. Zachary Lyttle then ran around a Joshua Watts block for a 40 yard touchdown run. However, the touchdown was called back due to a penalty.
On the same series, quarterback Myles Taylor dropped back and passed to a streaking Marlon Gardner for a 50 yard touchdown pass. The two teams then exchanged field position for the remainder of the second quarter and the Lions lead 14-0 at halftime.
On the first play from scrimmage of the second half, New Jersey scored a touchdown when their running back ran sixty yards around the right side of the Lion defense. The Lion defense then stopped the extra point attempt and the score was now 14-6.
The momentum had shifted to New Jersey and they moved further into scoring position with each exchange of possession in the third quarter. Lion safety Jalen Young was credited with saving a touchdown run that could have given the Giants the opportunity to tie the game.
In the fourth quarter, the Lion offense got on track. Christian Ancrum ran behind Khairi Manns and Luke Clifford blocking for a 40 yard gain to put the Lions inside of the New Jersey twenty yard line. The Lion offense would fumble on the drive inside of the 15. However, the good field position allowed the remainder of the game to be played deep in New Jersey territory.
The Lion offense would get within the New Jersey five yard line on two additional possessions, once turning the ball over on downs and then time running out with the lions on the one yard line.
