Lions Pull Away From North Rockland 12-6 10/12/08
A prepared North Rockland team came to New Rochelle to avenge a first week loss to the Lions. As expected the game on Sunday was a closer contest, but the Lions pulled away late for a 12-6 victory.
North Rockland received the ball first and drove downfield against the Lion defense. The Lion defense eventually held when North Rockland was on the 12 yard line. Dean Tomarello batted away an end-zone pass on second down. Rashan Gilmore stepped up and tackled a Red Raider receiver on third down. Gilmore then ended the threat by intercepting the fourth down pass as the Red Raider quarterback was rushed by Bryce Davis.
The teams traded possession but the Lions were still deep in their own territory at the beginning of the second quarter.
With the Lion offense on their 15 yard line, Lion running back Isaiah Washington helped the Lions cause with a 50 yard sprint up the right sideline behind Miles Walker, and Bryson Welch blocks. Two plays later Danny Pistolesi sprinted around the left end of Marlon Riley and followed a Isaiah Washington block thirty yards to the end-zone, giving the Lions a 6-0 lead.
The lead didn’t last for long. The Lions lined up to kickoff after their touchdown. The Red Raider runner ran through the Lion unit and outran them for a 65 yard touchdown. The Red Raiders then recovered an onside kick in an attempt to score again, but the Lion defense, lead by Kobe Gathers and Marquez-Jackson-Allen, held. The two teams went to halftime tied 6-6.
The second half became a defensive battle for both teams. Late in the third quarter, Deane Tomarello changed the momentum of the game by intercepting a North Rockland pass and returning it to the Red Raider 35 yard line. After a penalty against the Lions, Tomarello and Isaiah Washington blasted their way up-field with tough running. Danny Pistolesi then followed center Bryson Welch and guard Gavin Nelson up the middle before breaking away to the right for a thirty yard touchdown.
The two teams traded possessions in the fourth quarter until quarterback Danny Pistolesi passed to Jordan Davis, who streaked up-field for a 50 yard score. The touchdown was called back, due to holding and the Lions ran out the clock.
Other Lions who played well were Myson Robinson, Gabriel Perez, Vaughn Howard, Paul Wright, Habib Dixon, Joshua Watts,Marlon Gardner, and Tyquan Ennis.
