Lions Downed 33-0 vs Monroe-Woodbury
10/11/09
On Sunday 10/11/09 the Lions traveled to Monroe-Woodbury to face the undefeated Crusaders. The combination of playing a good team and turning the ball over proved to be too much for the Lions to overcome, and they fell 33-0.
The Crusaders began on offense and on the third play from scrimmage, their runner ran outside of the Lion defense for a 60 yard touchdown. On the next Lion possession, the Lions were forced to punt despite a strong run by Zachary Lyttle behind Nasheim Highland, Khairi Manns, Luke Clifford and Ahmad Galimore. On fourth down, Lion punter Myles Taylor kicked the ball to the Monroe-Woodbury returner, who followed his blocking 75 yards into the end-zone for the second Monroe touchdown of the game.
On the ensuing kickoff things got worse for the Lions as Monroe-Woodbury recovered the onside kick attempt. With good field position in Lion territory, they would score on the drive to take a 19-0 first quarter lead. In the second quarter a Lion fumble deep in their territory gave the Crusaders good field position inside of the Lion 25 yard line. Monroe scored again to go into the halftime leading 26-0.
On the second half kickoff Lion Jalen Young received the ball and followed his blocking to break free from the Monroe defenders. However, after running 70 yards across field, Young was tackled on the Monroe five yard line. A fumble exchange, tackle for loss, and a penalty pushed the Lions out of scoring position and they turned the ball over to Monroe on downs. The two teams played out the remainder of the game with Monroe scoring once more for the final score.
Lions who continued to play hard in defeat included Andrew Capizzano, Ryan Love, Tiason Moreno, Christian Ancrum, Paul Wright, Makhel Wilson, William Weber, Rashan Sullins, Victoria Jones-Alleyne, and Elliott Aponte.
