Lions Run To 25-12 Playoff Victory 10/7/07
On Sunday the Lions traveled to Bergen to play the top seeded Broncos in a quarter-final playoff game. From the start the Lion offense came out moving the football with strong running by DaMarcus Miller(27), Devonte Banner(24) and Bryson Hayes(21). Bergen forced a punt on the opening drive but the Lions were in good defensive field position. Bergen received the ball and the Lion defense, led by Akel Walker(52), Jonathan Yudell(57) and Charlie Verni(58), clamped down. After the Lion defense forced Bergen to punt, Tyler Fernandez(2) returned it 40 yards to the Bergen 5 yard line. A penalty on the return moved the football back, but the Lions offense drove the ball to the one and Fernandez(2) sneaked on a 'quarterback keeper' for the opening score. The teams exchanged field position once again until the second quarter when Fernandez returned another punt, this one for a 45 yard touchdown and a 12-0 halftime lead.
In the second half
the Lions received the first offensive possession and came out firing. On teh first play Fernandez(2) passed deep to Antoine Lewis(14) for a 40 yard gain. He then hit Banner(24) for a 15 yard gain. After a few short runs, Miller (27) then blasted his way in for a 10 yard touchdown and a 18-0 Lion lead. Miller(27) sealed the Lions scoring with a 35 yard sideline ‘tight rope’ run for the Lion final touchdown, with Hayes adding the extra point. Withe the score 25-0, Bergen was able to score twice in the closing minutes on long run and pass plays as new Lion defenders entered the game.
This was a total team game as the offense and defense played well for the Lions. Ryan Gil(64) DaMarcus Miller(27) (with a interception), Bryce Davis(43), Danny Pistolesi(12), Dean Tomarello(16), Jeremiah Minyard(66), and Justin Turner(35), all played well for the Lions.
The Lions will play Eastchester this weekend for the division final and the right to play for the championship.
