Lions Rebound against New Jersey 34-0
9/28/08
The Lions returned home this past Sunday after a tough game the previous week versus Monroe-Woodbury. This past week’s opponent was a newly formed (first year) New Jersey Giant team.
The Giant offense started strongly against the Lion defense, moving the ball into Lion territory. But the Lion defense lead by Myson Robinson and Bryce Davis soon gathered itself and forced the Giants to turn the ball over on downs.
The Lion offense moved the ball against New Jersey with Marquez Jackson-Allen bullying his way up field. Quarterback Danny Pistolesi spread the ball around with sharp passing to Isaiah Washington. Jackson-Allen finished off the drive with a twenty yard burst to the right corner of the end-zone. Washington added the extra point dive.
The Giant offense then gave the Lions excellent field position when they were tackled on their punt attempt at their own twenty-yard line. Lion running back Rashan Gilmore took advantage with a twenty-yard pitch and run for a touchdown. Gilmore then added the extra point conversion.
On the next Giant offensive series the Lion defense forced a fumble that was recovered by Danny Pistolesi on the Giant 15 yard line. Rashan Gilmore ran the football down to the one yard line and from there fullback Kobe Gathers scored on a one yard plunge. quarterback Vaughn Howard added the extra point run, and the Lions took a 21-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, Lion Danny Pistolesi got into the scoring act with a 37 yard across field run that started going to the left until he reversed field, dodged several Giant tacklers and outran the Giant secondary to one yard line before being pushed out of bounds. Pistolesi dived off-tackle into the end-zone on the next play behind the blocking of Jahkim McCain and Jeremiah Harris. Kobe Gathers added the extra point run.
Late in the fourth quarter, another Giant fumble lead to another Lion touchdown drive. The drive was hi-lighted by runs by Marlan Riley, Joshua Watts, Mike Davis and Gabriel Perez, linemen who were being put in the backfield to run the football for the Lions. The drive ended when Mike Davis scored the touchdown from 5 yards away.
The defense on the field most of the day that held New Jersey scoreless was lead by down lineman Habib Dixon-King, Tyquan Ennis, end Paul Wright, and linebacker Marlon Gardner. Other Lions who played well were Miles Walker, Gavin Nelson, Sincere Savoy, and Dean Tomarello.
