Lions Roar 25-12 9/23/07
The Jr. Pee Wee Lions traveled to Valley Cottage on Sunday 9/23/07 to face a tough Indian team. The game began as a hard hitting affair and the Lions defense opened the scoring when safety Dean Tomarello(16) picked off a Valley Cottage pass and sprinted 45 yards to the end-zone. The Lions defense looked to continue their scoreless streak as defensive stalwarts Jonathan Yudell(57), Jeremiah Minyard(66) and Charlie Verni all recovered Valley Cottage fumbles to set up Lion drives.
Demarcus Miller(27) and Bryson Hayes(21) were the workhorses of the drive that ended with Bryson Hayes(21) barreling his way for a 5 yard touchdown and Demarcus Miller(27) adding the extra point. With the Lions enjoying a 13-0 lead, a Valley Cottage running back changed the landscape and dashed 50 yards for a touchdown with 8 minutes left until halftime. The Lion offense moved the ball on the next series but were unable to score. After a Yudell(57) punt, the Indians began passing and a receiver was able to get behind the Lions secondary for a 50 yard pass on the last play of the half. And just that quickly the Lion lead was reduced to 13-12.
The Lions were able to regroup and came out determined in the second half as Miller, Hayes and Danny Pistolesi(12) moved the ball upfield with short power running. Despite double coverage, Antoine Lewis(14) then added to the drive by plucking a Tyler Fernandez(2) 40 yard bomb out of the air and landing on the 5 yard line. After a penalty, Miller(27) then added to the Lion lead with a 10 yard burst up the middle. The Lion defense then clamped down with the help of Jeremiah Minyard(66), Devonte Banner(24), Charlie Verni(58) and Bryce Davis(43). On offense the Lions returned to the power running game behind the blocking of Jordan Luzzi(85), Deandre(78) and Ryan Gil(64), leading to Miller’s (27) second touchdown of the game.
Other players of note in this thrilling game were Dean Tomarello(16) with two interceptions, Rashan Gilmore with power running, and the gutsy all around play of Tyler Fernandez.
