Lions Comeback and Tie Monroe-Woodbury 13-13

9/21/08

This was a early season test for both teams as Monroe-Woodbury came in undefeated, having surrendered only 13 points, while the Lions were undefeated and had not surrendered any points in their first two games.

The Lions scoreless streak ended with the first play after the kickoff as the Crusader quarterback followed his center up-field then sprinted to the left sideline into the end-zone for a 47 yard score. The all important extra point run was stopped by Lions Rashan Gilmore, Myson Robinson and Marquez Allen-Jackson.

Down 6-0, the Lion offense was unable to move the football throughout the first quarter.  Monroe would move the ball again using ‘scrum’ plays up the middle in the first quarter. A Crusader halfback was able to get outside on a sweep and sprinted 33 yards for the Crusaders second score. The extra point pass was deflected by Lion cornerback Isaiah Washington but fell in the hands of the Crusader receiver.

The two teams settled down and played each other evenly through the second quarter. It seemed the Lions would go into the half down 13-0, but with 15 seconds left until the half halfback Danny Pistolesi exploded around right end and outran the Crusader secondary for a 55 yard score, allowing the Lions to close the score to 13-6 at the half.

After the half the Lions seemed to have momentum as they repeatedly stopped the Crusader offense. A fumble recovery by Lion Gabriel Perez ended the third quarter and gave the Lions excellent field position. Halfback Dean Tomarello took advantage of the field position by sweeping 40 yards to the Crusader 5 yard line. Pistolesi then dove into the end-zone from a yard away. Jordan Davis was given the responsibility of tying the game and he came through with an off-tackle blast behind Bryce Davis and Sincere Savoy to make the game 13-13.

The two teams fought to break the tie with the Lions coming closest when quarterback Danny Pistolesi found a streaking Dean Tomarello downfield but the pass just slipped through Tomarello’s hands. Tomarello made up for it when, while playing safety on defense, he ran down a Crusader running back seemingly headed for the end-zone.

Note: Late in the fourth quarter the game was delayed for 45 minutes due to an injury to Lion Bryce Davis. As a precautionary measure he was immobilized and brought to the hospital. We are happy to report that all tests were negative and that Bryce is due to play this weekend. Thank you to everyone concerned in Monroe.

Other Lions who played well were Kobe Gathers, Rashan Gilmore, Miles Harvey, Marlan Riley, Mike Davis, Vaughn Howard, and Gavin Nelson.
