Lions Downed 18-6 Against North Rockland 9/20/09
On Sunday the Lions hosted North Rockland looking to build on their previous weeks victory against the 1-1 Red Raiders.
North Rockland received the opening kickoff and put together a scoring drive against the Lion defenders. The key play was a third and long in which the Red Raiders completed a 30 yard ‘bomb’ pass. The Red Raiders would run it in form 15 yards away to take a fast 6-0 lead. The Lion offense came out with three strong runs but a fourth and two was not converted and the teams exchanged field position throughout the quarter.
In the second quarter the Red raiders began passing. Their pass offense drove inside of the Lion 5 yard line until the Lion defense, lead by Ahmad Galimore, Zachary Lyttle, Makhel Wilson, and Nasheim Highland stopped the fourth down and goal at the three yard line. The Lions offense then drove out of the end-zone thanks to the choppy runs of Jalen Young. After moving the ball to their 30 yard line the Lions were forced to punt.
However, the Lion punt attempt was blocked and the Red Raiders received the ball at the Lion 25 yard line. The Red Raiders took advantage of the field position and scored on a off tackle 25 yard run to take a 12-0 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter the Lion offense came alive when Jalen Young followed a Victoria Jones-Alleyne and Tiason Moreno block around end for a 45 yard run to the Red Raider 12 yard line. Young then scored with a run behind Joshua Watts and Moreno blocks into the end-zone for the touchdown, closing the score to 12-6 Red Raiders.
Early in the fourth quarter the defense was able to get the ball back to the offense and the Lions offense began to move the ball. Christian Ancrum and Zachary Lyttle handled the majority of the running following the blocking of Luke Clifford, Myles Harvey, and Ryan Love.
The Lions had momentum with under four minutes left in the game and quickly moved the ball to the Red Raider 25 yard line. However, the Red Raider defense caused and recovered a Lion fumble and the drive ended. The Lion defense was then unable to stop a critical third down and long that would have forced a Red Raider punt and give the Lions the ball again with enough time to score. The Red Raiders then ran out the clock with short runs until a running back broke away for a long touchdown, and the final score of 18-6.
Other Lions who played well included Myles Taylor, Elliott Aponte, Paul Wright, William Weber, Marlan Riley, Marlon Gardner, Andrew Capizzano, and Khairi Manns,
