Lions Win 7-6 In Final minute of Bowl game

The Lions traveled to Maryland for Thanksgiving weekend for the first annual Maryland State Turkey Bowl. In a wind-chill game of below 0 the Lions fought and came away with a last minute 7-6 win against the Stronghold Chargers of Maryland.

The Lion defense made the first play of the game when Jaishon Spady recovered a Charger fumble at the 40 yard line. Jarett Haines and Drew Tommarello followed Mahkel Wilson, Jordan Forrest and Mykai Joyner blocking into Charger territory. The Lions would fumble the football to the Chargers. The Chargers then drove to the Lions 3 yard line before the Lion defense of Jake Tommarello, Alfonso Garcia, Jaylin McGhee, Jamal Dallas, Barry Lee and Steffen Fernand held. However, the Lions were playing on a short field and after punting gave the ball back to the Chargers at the 35 yard line.

The Chargers runner would get around left end for a score and give the Chargers a 6-0 lead. The Lions defense stopped the all important extra-point run that proved to be the deciding point. The Chargers pinned the Lions on the ten yard line after the kickoff. Romeo Holden was the main workhorse runner on the drive that saw the Lions march 80 yards to the ten yard line before time expired in the second quarter and the Chargers held a 6-0 lead at halftime.

The two teams played evenly in teh third and fourth quarters until less than 6 minutes left in the game. Morgan Paul, Shameek Goodman, Steven McQuillar, Curtis Harlan and Storm Jones-Alleyen provided the blocking that allowed Tairus White-Edney, Jordan Forrest and Jake Tommarello to move the ball 60 yards on the ground into scoring territory with less than one minute left on the game clock.

Romeo Holden then followed a Jaylin McGhee block into the end-zone from 5 yards away for the tying touchdown. Jarett Haines would bulldoze his way into the end-zone for the extra point to give the Lions the 7-6 lead and win. Jaishon Spady then kicked the ball off and pinned the Chargers deep in their territory before quarterback sacks by Mahkel Wilson and Barry Lee ended the game. Congratulations to the Lions on a very successful 9-2 2010 season.
