Purple Wave Defeat NW Bulldogs (MD) 21-12 in Thanksgiving Bowl Game 11/26/2011
The New Rochelle Purple Wave Chiefs travelled to Baltimore, Maryland to participate in their annual Thanksgiving Bowl. The Purple Wave came away with an exciting 21-12 victory in this their final game of the season to finish with an impressive overall 9-1 wins to loss record.
The Purple Wave started on offence with an alignment of Jeremiah Hamilton, Edward Ciraco, Keelan Thomas, Steavenson Fernand, Stephen Ramon, Jarnell Turner, Taylor Douglas, Carlton Naughton, Marlon Gardner, Ny-Quel Fields and led by quarterback Gregory Powell. Both teams looked sluggish on their opening drives resulting in both teams seeing their initial drives stalled without scoring. However, on their second possession, the Purple Wave started their drive on their own 30 yard line after a fumble recovery by Stephen Ramon. Powell then threw a 30 yard strike to Carlton Naughton to the 40 yard line of the Bulldogs.
Successive runs by Taylor Douglas placed the ball on the 25 yard line of the Bulldogs. Then, short passes from Powell to Naughton advanced the ball downfield, which culminated in a 5 yard touchdown run by Keelan Thomas for the Purple Wave’s first score and a 6-0 lead. The Purple Wave then converted the extra point on a pass from Powell to Marlon Gardner, giving the Purple Wave a 7-0 lead.
The Bulldogs came roaring back with a scoring drive of their own via a long touchdown pass, the first passing touchdown the Purple Wave’s defense yielded for the entire season. However, the Purple Wave’s defense stopped the Bulldogs on their extra point conversion inside run attempt, thus holding on for a 7-6 lead.
On their next possession the Purple Wave’s offence engineered a drive from their own 35 yard line. Runs by Taylor Douglas, and a 35 yard pass and run from Powell to Carlton Naughton, who broke several tackles, placed the ball on the 12 yard line of the Bulldogs. Powell then hit Marlon Gardner with a 10 yard touchdown pass to make the score 13-6. A successful extra point conversion pass from Powell to Steavenson Fernand extended the Purple Wave’s lead to 14-6 which closed the first half. In the second half the Bulldogs engineered their second scoring drive with long passes resulting in a quick touch down. Again, the Purple Wave’s defense stopped the Bulldog’s extra point try and held the score to 14-12.
The two teams traded possessions until the 4th quarter when the Purple Wave embarked on a long, time consuming, game clinching drive starting on their own 30 yard line. Runs by Carlton Naughton, and short passes from Powell to Naughton placed the ball on the Bulldog’s 35 yard line. Then facing a third down and 10, with the ball on the 35 yard line of the Bulldogs, and the outcome of the game still uncertain, quarterback Gregory Powell came up with the play of the game.
Powell scrambled to his right under pressure and threw the ball all the way across the field to his left hitting receiver Steavenson Fernand for a first down at the 15 yard line of the Bulldogs. Runs by Keelan Thomas and Carlton Naughton advanced the ball to the 10 yard line of the Bulldogs. Then, Thomas scored the final touchdown with a nifty off tackle run to the right for a 20-12 Purple Wave lead. An extra point conversion run by Naughton extended the lead to 21-12 and the final score. The defense then held with the help of Gabriel Perez, D’waynne Edney, Jackson Klavan, Elijah Conn and Michael Broomfield.
Others contributing to the victory include Victoria Alleyne, Jose Nunez, Joshua Watts, Jean Vigroux, Christian Ancrum, Daniel Williams and Tyree Brewton.
