Chiefs Jump Over and Out versus Mount vernon-Forfeit Game 11/18/07
The most anticipated non-conference game of the season was to be the final game of the NRYTL season as the one loss Mount Vernon Razorbacks came to face the one loss Chiefs. These two teams faced off in a pre-season scrimmage and it was a hard hitting affair.
The game began with the Chiefs receiving the ball. The third play of the game saw quarterback Khalil "Pop" Edney(7) throw deep to his favorite target Jordan Frenza(1) for a 30 yard gain. A questionable penalty pushed the Chiefs back to the twenty yard line. However, Jordan Frenza(1) soon broke off of the right end block of Ray Ganley(19) and, as has been his recent custom, completely jumped over the head of the Mount Vernon defender and fought his way into the end-zone. A flag on the play suggested an illegal hold to the casual fan, but this was not the case.....the referees called unsportsmanlike conduct on Frenza's(1) "jump", stating that it was illegal for an offensive player to jump over the head of a defender. Anyone who has followed the Chiefs this season has seen the "Frenza Leap" so it was quite a surprise that this was the penalty.
The game was stopped as officials and coaches gathered to discuss the rule, but in the end the touchdown by the Chiefs was not allowed.
Once play resumed, and now facing a third down and ten on the Mount Vernon twelve yard line Edney(7) dropped back to pass and while under pressure threw the ball away while under pressure. The referees threw another flag during the play. Coach Butts and his staff thought the flag was due to a defender grabbing Edney's(7)incidenal facemask. However, the referees called intentional grounding against the Chiefs.
Already upset from the previous calls, Coach Butts called his team off of the field, gathered them together
and removed the team from the field.
Coach Butts made it a point afterwards to thank the Mount Vernon coaches and players for coming to play at as he felt they were also the victims of what he and his staff deemed poor officiating.
NRYTL is a member of the Rockland County PWL and an offensive player is allowed to leap over a defender. However, in the Westchester County PWL, which Mount Vernon is part of, it is not allowed.
On Sunday the officiating crew was from the Westchester league and were following Westchester rules.
For the 2007 season, game articles, photos and possible video will be posted mid-week following Sunday's games.
