ChiefS Fight Until the End In Tough loss to Valley Cottage 13-6
11/02/08

The Chiefs traveled to Nyack HS for another tough game against Valley Cottage on Sunday 11/2/08. These two teams faced off earlier in the season in a hard hitting tie game and this promised to be the same.

For a quarter and a half the two teams felt one another out. Hard hitting defense would be the name of the game as the Chiefs looked to dominate the line of scrimmage. At the two minute warning before halftime the Chief offense opened up.

Quarterback Joe Clarke hit a streaking Donovan Powell for a 35 yard completion. Clarke then passed to Beinson Bracey for 7 yards before hitting Gavin Harley at the two yard line. Harley fought the Valley Cottage defender for the football before spinning into the end-zone for the touchdown. The extra point failed and the Chiefs took a 6-0 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter the Chief offense would drive downfield on the Indian defense, but the offense fumbled the ball away inside of the twenty yard line. Valley Cottage would take advantage when their main runner broke free on a 50 yard run before being tackled inside of the Chief 20 yard line. Four plays later Valley Cottage would score and add the extra point to take a 7-6 lead.

In the fourth quarter, the Chiefs would battle back as runs by Malik Smith and Donovan Powell put the ball inside of the Valley Cottage 30. However, the drive would stall and the Chief defense, which had played a hard hitting dominating game, would allow a Valley Cottage runner to break away. The runner was caught by Malik Smith inside of the 20 yard line, but the Indians would score and take a 13-6 lead with under two minutes left in the game.

The Chiefs looked to make a comeback to win. On the kickoff Donovan Powell returned the Indian ball inside of the 45 yard line. Quarterback Joe Clarke would then pass to Malik Smith for a 15 yard gain. Using timeouts and downing the ball after plays the Chiefs offense worked its way inside of the Indian twenty yard line. However, a Joe Clarke pass intended for Gavin Harley was intercepted in the back of the end-zone to end the scoring threat and an exciting hard hitting game.

Be sure to come and see these two teams battle again as the Chiefs and the Indians will face off for a third time this Sunday at Fosina field.
