ChiefS Fall to North Rockland In Upset bid 42-20
10/12/08
On Sunday 10/12/08 the Chiefs faced first week opponent North Rockland once again. Since that meeting the Chiefs have steadily gotten better and were eager to show the crowd their improvement against the undefeated Red Raiders.
The game started fast when North Rockland returned the kickoff to the Chief 45 yard line. Two plays later the Red Raider runner split the Chief defense and ran into the end-zone. The extra point kick was good and North Rockland lead 8-0. After changes of possession the Chiefs offense had the ball late in the first quarter. Quarterback Joe Clarke then passed to Malik Smith who sprinted downfield into the end-zone for a Chief touchdown. The extra point was no good and the score was 8-6.
The Chiefs were called for unsportsmanlike celebrating on their Chief touchdown (In Pop Warner players are not allowed to simulate dancing, strutting or showboating etc.). This was a big penalty as it forced the Chiefs to kickoff from their own twenty yard line. North Rockland returned the ball to the Chief 30 and with the good field position, scored on the next offensive play to take a 14-6 lead.
Donovan Powell gave the Chiefs good field position on the kickoff return. The Chiefs quarterback Joe Clarke lead the team downfield with passing to Tyreik Kerr for yardage. Malik Smith then ran off tackle for a 37 yard touchdown to close the score at 14-12.
The second quarter saw the Red Raider offense drive downfield once again and score on a 21 yard pass play despite good defense by Aaron Freeze, Gavin Harley, and Beinson Bracey. The extra point kick was missed and North Rockland lead 20-12 with less than two minutes until the half.
The next series saw Chiefs Donovan Powell and Joe Clarke become factors. Powell returned the kickoff to put the Chief offense in good field position at the Chief 40 yard line. Powell then drew a pass interference call against North Rockland when Joe Clarke attempted a pass to him at the North Rockland 45 yard line. Powell then streaked past the Red Raider defender and hauled in a 45 yard touchdown (rainbow) pass from quarterback Joe Clarke. Powell then held for Clarke as he kicked the extra points (which counts as 2 pts) to tie the game at 20-20 at the half.
Based on the first half it was clear that the Chiefs would either have to defensively stop the Red Raider offense, that scored on each possession of the first half, or keep up with them by scoring on offense.
In the third quarter the Chiefs defense, lead by Wjante Holden and Corey Holder stopped the Red Raiders on a goal line stand and forced a field goal attempt that was missed. But late in the third quarter the North Rockland offense drove the field for a touchdown to extend their lead to 28-20(extra point kick).
The Chief offense stalled in the third an fourth quarters and could not sustain any drives. North Rockland added two touchdowns late in the fourth quarter to make the final score 42-20 although the hard fought contest was much closer than the final score suggests.
