Chiefs Upset By Bergen 20-12
9/30/07

Sunday saw a great Jr. Midget football game between the Bergen County Broncos and the NR Chiefs billed as the "The Battle of the Unbeatens". This would be the Chiefs first big test of the season and although they lost teh game, they proved up to the challenge.

The game started with Bergen taking the kickoff and swiftly scoring a first quarter touchdown, covering 70 yards in five running plays(xp kick failed). The Chiefs players seemed shocked at the ease that bergen moved the ball. the Chiefs attempted to return the favor but were shut down in three plays and punted the ball back to Bergen. Bergen then repeated their first drive success with a 60 yard drive on four running plays (xp kick failed). The Bergen defense shut down the Chiefs offense once again and returned the ball to their offense. After another two long runs By Bergen it almost seemed as if the Chiefs would be overmatched in this contest.

Just when it seemed the Chiefs might not be able to stop the Bergen attack, defensive end Ray Ganley blasted the Bergen quarterback, causing a fumble on the Chief 40 yard line, and exciting the crowd and his teammates. Coach Butts then decided to forego the running game and had quaterback Khalil Edney drop back and throw deep. Edney hit a streaking Jordan Frenza behind the Bergen secondary for a 60 yard touchdown. Instead of being down 18-0 the Chiefs had momentum and were only down 12-6 in a game that seemed out of hand just moments before. Bergen responded with a score of their own before the half to push the score to 20-6, but it was clearly a different game.

The Chiefs defense shut down Bergen for the remainder of the game, with multiple sacks. Edney teamed up with Frenza once again in the third quarter for another 50 yard bomb for a touchdown, closing the score at 20-12. The game ended with a Chief attempeted rally for the final touchdown and extra point. Edney drove the offense to the bergen 40 yard line with under a minute left in the game. Three consecutive passes were just off of the finger tips of Frenza and Exander Rosado. On fourth down and 10 Edney was sacked to end the scoring threat and game.

For the 2007 season, game articles, photos and possible video will be posted mid-week following Sunday's games. Stay tuned.
