ChiefS Battle Back To Tie 9/14/08
The Jr. Midget Chiefs came to play on Sunday versus the Valley Cottage Indians.
Valley Cottage opened the game with a strong drive that put the momentum in their favor. the Chiefs defense, led by Gavin Harley and Corey Holder stepped up to the challenge and stripped a valley Cottage running back of the football to end the threat.
The two teams then settled in and played tough defense throughout the first half. In the second quarter, halfback Beinson Bracey picked up a muffed Chief handoff on offense and sprinted 40 yards to the Valley Cottage 5 yard line. From there quarterback Joe Clarke passed to Gavin Harley in the flat. Harley outran Indian defenders into the end-zone to give the Chiefs a 6-0 lead (extra point failed).
Valley Cottage responded with a drive of their own just before the half. Chief penalties helped Valley Cottage move the football downfield until they tied the score 6-6 with a blast from four yards away (extra point failed).
In the second half Valley Cottage blocked a Chief punt on the Chiefs 15 yard line. Defensive plays by Malik Smith helped stop what seemed like a sure scoring opportunity in a close game. However, after stopping Valley Cottage and taking over possession, the Chief offense fumbled the ball back to Valley Cottage on their own 28. Valley Cottage then drove to the one yard line. Three straight Indian runs up the middle were stopped by Chiefs Malik Smith, Gavin Harley and Corey Holder. After a Valley Cottage offensive fasle start, and on fourth down from the 7 yard line, Valley Cottage went outside and swept into the end-zone for a 12-6 lead (extra point failed).
With less than two minutes in the game the Chiefs didn't give up. Coach Butts went into his two minute drill as quarterback Joe Clarke passed to Donovan Powell on successive plays that covered 50 yards. Clarke went back to Powell for the tying touchdown in the last seconds of the game. Unfortunately the extra point for the win was stopped by Valley Cottage.
Other players who played well for the Chiefs were Dontae Brisco, Roger Gil, Tyreik Kerr, Wjanye Holden, Aaron Freeze, Anthony Battle, Sam Schwarz, Jahair Thompson, Jovani Jones, Chris Gamby.
