Chiefs End With 18-6 Win Over Suffolk Steelers

11/28/09

On Saturday November 28th, the Jr. Midget Chiefs faced the Suffolk (Va.) Steelers in the 9th Annual Woodlawn Bowl in Baltimore Maryland. The Chiefs defense dominated the contest with the offense contributing enough to secure the 18-6 victory.

The Chiefs came out and put together a time-consuming 80 yard drive to open the game. CJ Anthony, Jonathan Forrrest and Bryson Hayes kept the Steeler defense honest in their pursuit. Forrest positioned the ball inside of the twenty with a 20 yard burst before Nasir Shelton completed the drive with a 20 yard touchdown pass to Rakim Parker. Parker caught the ball at the five yard line before bulling his way to the pylon for the touchdown and a 6-0 lead.

After the ensuing kickoff the Steelers took to the field for the first time. After two defensive stops by Chief defenders the Steelers looked to pass on third down. Parker rushing the passer, stopped, jumped high and caught the pass in mid-air. He then sprinted 35 yards into the end-zone to give the Chiefs a 12-0 lead entering the second quarter.

The teams exchanged possessions through the second quarter until the Chiefs punted and pinned Suffolk deep with less than a minute until the half. The Steelers ran a dump pass to the left flat at their 30 yard line. The runner broke two Chief tackles and ran through the secondary across field. As the last play of the half it seemed the Steelers would close the score with a touchdown. But out of nowhere a hustling Keimon Barrow tracked down the Steeler ball-carrier and tackled him at the ten yard line as time expired.

The second half was another game of field positioning for the teams. The Chiefs were content to run the football while running out the clock with a 12-0 lead. The Steelers were in hurry up mode, which lead to two interceptions by the Chiefs defense. The Chiefs offensive run game wore on the Steelers defense in the fourth quarter Bryson Hayes exploded for a 45 yard run into Suffolk territory. Forrest carried the ball to the four yard line and dived in for the touchdown and 18-0 lead.

Suffolk would get on board with the next sequence of series. The Steelers returned the ensuing kickoff to the Chief 15 yard line. The Chiefs bend but don’t break defense held the Steeler offense out of the end-zone on fourth down from the two yard line.  Now on offense, the Chief quarterback and running back fumbled the handoff in the end-zone, which Suffolk recovered for a touchdown.

Other Chiefs who played well were Jonathan Yudell, Brandon Trotta, Jevon Taylor, Demetrius Rodriguez, Rakim Parker, Jordan Luzzi, Jordan Lawrence, William Bloom, Tyrell Bennett, Ishmael Ben-Reuben, Jahari Ferrell, Demarie Ralliford, Lovell Major and Michael White.
